KU Medical Library - PubMed vs. Embase

This guide will compare two of the most popular medical research databases: PubMed and Embase.

PubMed and Embase Citation Management

Exporting citations from the two databases is a bit different.

PubMed, even after the latest update a few years ago, does not offer a direct export. You can export individual citations; batches of them (by checking the boxes next to the citations you want to export); and from the Clipboard (note that the Clipboard is temporary, so export your citations before you close PubMed). There are two ways to export from PubMed:

  • Click Save --> Set "Format" to PubMed --> Click Create File --> Upload file to you citation tool
  • Click Send to --> Citation manager --> Create file --> Upload file to you citation tool

In Embase there are two main methods for exporting citations (individually, selecting multiple citations, or from your Clipboard:

  • Click Export --> Select RIS format (Mendeley, EndNote) --> Click Export --> Upload file to you citation tool
  • Click Export --> Select RefWorks Direct Export --> Click Export --> Log into your RefWorks account
